The main characters in the story are Carter, Eric, and the animals are a dinasour and a teddy bear. The Setting of the story is the stone ages with cavemen and stuff like that. 6 main things to writing a good childrens story

Theme-  It is an insight or viewpoint or a concept a story conveys.  In a children’s story the theme should be happy and should avoid preaching, they should talk about life and be exciting.  The theme should also be found out not blurted out.

Plot-  A plot is usually a conflict or problem surrounding the main character within him or herself, with other characters or even other circumstances.  The person has to solve it, but should fail in 1 form and a children’s book should only have 1 conflict.

Story Structure-  At the beginning of the story you should go straight into the action and at the end close it quickly.  The structure should be simple and shouldn’t go back to earlier scenes.  You shouldn’t have to many scenes or too little if it is a picture book.  You also need to talk in third person or first not both.

Characters-  Before anything you have to know who your characters are well.  The main character should be as old as the children you are reading to and should be someone the reader can relate to.

Setting-  The setting should be interresting and or familiar, something kids would like.

Style and Tone-  You should wirte simply and directly with your paragraphs, sentences, and words to be short so the reader can understand them.  Use dialog whenever you can and use direct qoutes instead of indirect.  Don’t use big chuks of narration.  Use language that make atomspehere or tone that is suited for the story.  Use poetic devices for younger children.  Don’t be cutesy, sweet, sentimental or condescending.

The Pearl: Chapters 5 and 6

Chapter 5 was telling us a lot of things.  Most of this chapter took place at night.  In this chapter in the early morning Kino was attacked and ended up killing the man who attacked him.  While he was in this rage he also managed to hurt Juana.  So he and Juana go there stuff, but couldn’t go beacause of an hole in there boat.

When they had all there stuff up there house was put to fire and burned down.  At the time nobody was inside.  They went to Juan Toma’s house to hide they hid until dark.  At dark they got all there things and started walking.  The neighbors were supsicous and sent out a search party.

In chapter 6 daybreak hit and they had to stop and hide in a bush until the next nightfall.  While they were hiding in the bush Kino spotted the search.  Kino said that Juana and Coyotito should go, but Juana insisted on staying and helping him.  When they got out of there to safe place on a mountain he realized that the trackers would be up there soon so they had to head west.  Juana went up to hide in a cave.

When she was watching Kino and the enemy got real close Kino had his knife and the searcher raised his gun and Kino threw and killed another man.  Kino and his family then returned home with the pearl, with 2 men dead and Coyotito with the top of his head shot away in the pearl.  He then throws it and never finds it again.  That is how the book ends.

 2.  I think that Kino did really love Juana.  I think this because Kino was try to protect her by getting her away from people who could possibly kill her.  Also Kino was selling that pearl to make a better life for them which shows that he loves her.  That is why I think Kino really does love Juana.

My Reading and Writing Intrests

The types of books that I enjoy are sports books, comedies and the occasional drama.  Two issues I am interested in are Global Warming and The War in Iraq.  My favorite type of writing pieces are creative writing of free-writes.  I think I would workwell with basketballboy 25 because it looks like he is a baseball fan and so am I.

Chapter 3 review

I have a couple impressions of the doctor after chapter 3.  I think he is con man.  I also think he is evil.  He is not just trying to make a living.  Those are my impressions of him.     I think he is a con man because what would the purpose of keeping the pearl at his house.  He wouldn’t need to because he wouldn’t get anything since he already has enough money.  Kino really needs and he would do better things with it.  I also think that he did give the baby the powder to make him worse.  I think this because Coyotitio was suddenly getting better, then after he got the powder he seemed to get worse.  That is why I think he is evil.     Those are my impressions of the doctor.  He is a con man and is evil.  My reasoning stated this in paragraph 3.  That is what I think about the doctor

Chapter 4 Review

1.      The name of the village La Paz tells us the island is foreign and is in the middle of no wear since the capital is 1000 miles away.2.      I do agree that wealth can destroy people.  Many people whose suddenly get rich after being poor for so long can lose their way, but some people don’t.3.      The father told them this because he doesn’t want them getting hurt or cheated out there in the big city.  From lying to them he can save people’s money.  He can lose a lot of people’s trust though. 4.      I say he was brave because he doesn’t know anyone there and he isn’t from there so he can get cheated easily.5.      It tells us about the traveler that he has never done this before.  He shouldn’t abandon the journey it’s always better to learn the hard way.6.      I think the doctor attacked Kino because he was mad at him for not giving him the pearl to keep at his house. 7.      The significance of this statement is saying that he is a man and is the best.

Predictions and Comparisons

I have a couple predictions about what will in happen in chapter 3 of the Pearl.  My first one is that the baby’s health will continue to deteriorate.   My final predictions is that Kino will show of his pearl.  Those are my predictions.

There are a couple comparisons of the book to the lottery article.  Kino is like the winners, he really just wants to use the money for himself and his self.  He doesn’t want to give it poor people.  The doctor is also like people who tried to steal the money from the winners.  The doctor was trying to keep the pearl at his house.  Those are the comparisons I found.

Lottery Article

This article is about eight lottery winners.  These winners thought they had it all, but eventually got themselves into some serious debt.  Some of the winners even had to file for bankruptcy.  These winners were from all over the world and had 1 thing in common, they had no money.

The winners had some interesting things that they had to do.  For instant the first winner actually won the big bucks twice in 1985 and 1986.  She said what she hit was rock bottom.  Another winner know lives and his social security.  He was also sued by his ex-girlfriend and his brother was arested for getting a hit man to try and kill him.  1 year later he eventually filed for bankruptcy and liv on $450 a month and food stamps.  Those are just a coule of the crazy things it can do, but there are many more.
