Infield Hit by Thomas J. Dygard
Hal Stevens was always compared to his dad all-star third baseman Ralph Stevens. This was until this season. His mom Ellen Stevens and his dad had divorced each other about 6 years ago. Since that time his dad remarried and he and his mom had moved three time. This time he had moved to Cannon City where Hal attended Cannon City High.
He came in the middle of nowhere, but he knew baseball season was coming up and then he would have friends. He also knew that with baseball season came his dad. This wasn’t a bad thing it just wasn’ a good thing because then people would act weird around him and he would always be compared to him. This year he thought would be better since nobody knew him they wouldn’t know who his dad was which was good. His hopes were quickly put down after he found out who the coach was Don Mavis an all-star shortstop who is good friends with his dad.
He was hoping that the coach didn’t know who he was. He put that aside and found some kids to talk to in his in his french class. There names were Jason and Ed and they quickly became friends. At lunch Hal even sat with Ed because Jason was occupied with his girlfriend. They all did one thing together they all went to practice.
The first day of practice was laid back they met the coach, ran some drills and got there jerseys. The whole week the coach didn’t give any instruction just watched during drills and scrimmage games. Hal was going up against Blaine who was an amazing third baseman so Hal knew he couldn’t win the position. He didn’t even think he would start until the coach talked to Warner also a senior, but a second baseman who wasn’t as good, but alright. Warner had a good bat, but not a good glove like Hal.
When coach talked to Warner he said he was moving him to left field. Next he talked to Hal and said I moved Warner to left and your playing second and he also said for him to get a lighter bat.. Hal was excited, but didn’t know if Warner knew, he hadn’t. The next day his dad called and Hal told him that the coach moved him to second base, but Ralph didn’t sound so happy. His dad also said that he would make it out to a game.
His dad was in town and made it to a practice where all the players and coach Mavis met Hal’s dad. After the practice Hal went out to dinner. The next day was the biggest game of the season it was against the only other undefeated team. This game was also the toughest because they didn’t have there biggest hitter Warner because he quit the team. They ended up losing the game in a hard fought battle.
After the game Blaine, and Freddie another senior went out to dinner with Hal to discuss Warner quitting the team and said that Hal should talk to them. Hal knew Warner quit the team because he thought Hal got second base because his dad was Ralph Stevens. Hal agreed to talk to him, but had to call his dad first for some advice. The next day Hal talked to Warner and just told him that being Ralph Stevens son isn’t easy and that he needs to suck it up and play because they need him. In the end Warner comes back and plays and everything is right again.
Protaganist- The protaganist would be Hal because he had to overcome mant things. These were the thought of not starting and Warner.
Antaganist- In this case Warner would be the antaganist because he would really get on Hal’s nerves and try to stop him from doing his job. He would make him feel bad about wht he was doing.
